The Judging Knot: A Lesson on Judging

The Judging Knot

“We are to judge what is right."

People say,
·         “Don’t judge!”
·         “Judge for yourselves”
·         “Only God can judge!”
How do we reconcile those three opinions?

There are three categories of things that can be judged:

1.      Concepts
2.     Christians
3.     Non-Christians

There are three categories of judgers:
1.      You
2.      God
3.   Church/Civil Government

 Krino:
·         To determine
·         To condemn

Concepts:

These are things like books, movies, ideas, and philosophies.  They are not expressly connected to any people, although many people have become connected to them.  (In other words, these are the unseen things that we judge that often lead us to judge the people who have them)

Christians:

Grey area (things that are not expressly mentioned in the Bible, but you can find a case for/against them in Scripture)

            Honor other parents’ choices
Honor other people’s doctrinal positions, as long as they are not core “Jesus saves” issues

White area  (These are amoral issues)

Don’t judge in dumb things, like shoes or clothes or manner of speaking (bar swearing)

“…The average Christian is the most penetratingly critical individual.…The effect of criticism is a dividing up of the one criticized; the Holy Ghost is the only One in the true position to criticize, He alone is able to show what is wrong without hurting and wounding.  It is impossible to enter into communion with God when you are in a critical temper; it makes you hard and vindictive and cruel, and leaves you with the flattering unction that you are a superior person,  Jesus says, as a disciple, cultivate the uncritical temper.  It is not done once and for all.  Beware of anything that puts you in the superior person’s place. There is no getting away from the penetration of Jesus.…Every wrong thing that I see in you, God locates in me.  Every time I judge, I condemn myself.  Stop having a measuring rod for other people.  There is always one fact more in every man’s case about which we know nothing.  The first thing God does is to give us a spiritual spring-cleaning; there is no possibility of pride left in a man after that.  I have never met the man I could despair of after discerning what lies in me apart from the grace of God. …

Jesus says – “Judge not, that ye be not judge”; if you do judge, it will be measured to you exactly as you have judged, it will be measured to you exactly as you have judged.  Who of us would dare to stand before God and say – “My God, judge me as I have judged me fellow men?”  We have judged our fellow men as sinners; if God should judge us like that we would be in hell.  God judges us through the marvellous Atonement of Jesus Christ.”

- Oswald Chambers

Black area (These are matters of salvation)

Read Matthew 7:1-5 and Matthew 18:15-17.  This is how you deal with sin in the church.  Pray, self-examine, and then approach in humility and brokenness.

Unbelievers:
You are not to be their judge.  Recognize their need for a Savor and go after them!

Dealing with being judged

If you feel like someone is judging you, check your heart--is God convicting you of something? Sometimes the person doesn't even mean to judge you, but God uses them to show you an area of weakness. But then, sometimes someone is judging you without cause--if that's the case, remember that God is the only Judge you have to worry about.

“We are to judge what is right.”

And the verse for next lesson (Other Religions) is 1 Corinthians 8:5-6.  I know it's long...but it's to make up for the short verse this past week.

What Happened to “Battles are Ugly Affairs”? - Our Place in the Culture War

Something changed between this...
“Susan, Eve’s daughter,” said Father Christmas. “These are for you,” and he handed her a bow and a quiver full of arrows and a little ivory horn. “You must use the bow only in great need,” he said, “for I do not mean you to fight in the battle. It does not easily miss. And when you put this horn to your lips and blow it, then, wherever you are, I think help of some kind will come to you.”
Last of all he said, “Lucy, Eve’s Daughter,” and Lucy came forward. He gave her a little bottle of what looked like glass (but people said afterwards that it was made of diamond) and a small dagger.
“In this bottle,” he said, “there is a cordial made of the juice of one of the fire-flowers that grow in the mountains of the sun. If you or any of your friends are hurt, a few drops of this will restore you. And the dagger is to defend yourself at great need. For you also are not to be in the battle.”
“Why, Sir,” said Lucy. “I think—I don’t know—but I think I could be brave enough.”
“That is not the point,” he said. “But battles are ugly when women fight.”
-The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis

God makes basic gender roles pretty clear: Titus 2:3-5; 1 Timothy 2:11-15; 1 Corinthians 11:3

YES, we are absolutely supposed to submit to our male authorities, and YES, we are absolutely supposed to be strong warriors for Christ. They aren’t mutually exclusive!

Submission: an attitude of the heart.

   We Need....
1. A heart devoted to God & following His will
       (Mark 12:30; Colossians 3:17)
2. Humility and willingness to serve and put others first—particularly family
       (Colossians 3:18; Titus 2:1-5; 1 Peter 3; Mark 10:42-45)
3. Strength, wisdom, a hardworking spirit, and the determination to invest time wisely
       (1 Timothy 5:9-14; Titus 2:3-5; Proverbs 31:10-31)

Going out to battle isn’t the only way to fight.
Ephesians 6:12 – For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Satan doesn’t discriminate between men and women, but he wants to bring as much destruction as possible, so he likes to attack leaders in order to hurt the followers at the same time.

We are...
1. Prayer Warriors
        a. Support from behind the scenes.
        b. Who should we pray for?
Family, especially the head of the household
              Friends & prayer partners
              Missionaries
              Unsaved family/friends
              Pastors
Anyone else God brings to mind!

2.  Eye  Protectors
         a. 1 Timothy 2:9-10; 1 Peter 3:3-4; Proverbs 11:22; Matthew 18:6-7
         b. We can make life more difficult for guys, or honor them by dressing modestly

3. Healers, Counselors, Nurturers, Comforters...
        a. Encouraging words
        b. Being good friends to each other!
             Galatians 6:7-8

4. Swordfighters
        a. The Great Commission applies to all of us!
             Galatians 3:28; Colossians 3:11
         b. Satan attacks __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ , not just leaders
             1 Peter 5:8-9
         c. How can we face attacks without a weapon?
              Ephesians 6:10-18; Colossians 3:12
         d. How can we share the gospel if we’re not prepared?
              1 Peter 3:15

Revelation 3:15-19, 22 – Are we lukewarm?

Young women today are not warriors; not healers; not really anything. Their brains aren’t turned on, and they’re not willing to think critically. They focus only on outward beauty that will impress others, not on inward beauty that comes from being in the presence of God. They try to please others for selfish purposes, not to bless them or witness to them. They spend plenty of time in selfish pursuits—makeup, Internet, chick flicks, talking to friends, or just being bored—but no time serving others. Their last priority is serving others, unless it makes them look good. They’re totally willing to comfort a friend who is struggling, but not so much willing to do a chore for an annoying sibling who will probably never notice it, give up an outing with friends to serve at a food pantry, or do anything else that no one but God will see. They may be willing to go on a mission trip with their youth group or share a testimony with a small group, but they’re not willing to spend hours on their knees in an inner room in prayer and Scripture reading, establishing a relationship with the Lord who gave His life for them. They cry at a movie’s sad ending, but shut their ears to the real needs around them. They’re lukewarm, and though they may look good to others, God wants to take them and use their lives to make a real difference...but they’re so caught up in “self” that they can’t hear His call.

If we want to make a difference in the world, we have to be ready to fight for it. Fighting’s no fun...it’s painful, it’s sacrificial, and it means giving up things that mean so much to us, it feels like they’re part of us. It’s a lot to commit, and it can’t be done all at once...it’s a gradual journey that will take all our lives...but Jesus calls us to take up our crosses and follow Him.

Are we willing to do it?

Spring 2016

The schedule for spring 2016 is now posted!  Please go to the "Lesson Topics for Spring 2016" tab or click HERE: http://godspurified.blogspot.com/p/lesson-topics-for-fall-2015.html

As you can see from the plan, we're going way more in-depth this semester and tackling some tough topics.  We will try to keep everything understandable for the younger girls, but when we asked for topic recommendations at the end of the fall semester, the girls fired back such great, challenging topics that we were way too excited to say no!  Five of the eight topics were specifically requested by the girls.

We are SO blessed by our group of young ladies who are eager to think critically and learn to digest solid food, rather than being content with milk (1 Corinthians 3:2).  Thus, tougher topics this semester!

Parents: If you are uncomfortable with a topic, please feel free to contact us and discuss your concerns.  We would be happy to share lesson plans with you in advance and let you review everything we'll be presenting.  If you decide to keep your daughter home for that meeting, we'll understand.  We would also love to hear any wisdom/advice that you have to offer on any given topic!

Security in Christ

The Case of the $5 bill and the Airplane

John 14:15, American Popular Version
So, God reckons us righteous if we believe Him.
·         Reckon: To count; to number
·         Believe: To credit upon the authority or testimony of another  (Webster’s 1828)

The Case of the $5 Bill
I told "Mary" that I had hidden a $5 bill in the piano bench.  I asked her if I was truthful (she said yes).  I then told her that I had given her the $5.  Was it hers?  Yes.  Could she see it?  No.  I then told her to walk to the piano bench.  Halfway down, I asked her again if the $5 was hers.  Yes.  Could she see it?  No.  How did she know it was hers?  Because I said so.  Why did that matter?  Because I was truthful.  So it went until she got it out of the piano bench.  The point was, just as she had to believe my word that she had something she couldn't see, so we have to believe God's word that we have things that we can't see.

So, let’s look at some problems:
1.      2 Corinthians 5:17 – Am I a new creation?
2.      Romans 6:2 – Am I dead to sin?
3.      John 10:28 – Can I be taken from God?
4.      Hebrews 13:5 – Can God forsake me?
5.      1 Corinthians 10:13 – What if I’m tempted too much?
John 14:15
Romans 6:2, American Popular Interpretation

The Case of the Airplane
You cannot fly unless you are in the airplane.  Thus, we need to be in Christ in order to live as He commands.  Take a look at Ephesians.

Transferring the Reckoning

At the end of the lesson, we handed out prizes to our three groups for Bible memory.  Quite a few of the girls had memorized all the required verses, a few had memorized most of the extra verses, and one had memorized ALL the verses!

Reminder: the joint BL/HL Christmas party is on December 8.  Please plan on bringing 1-2 large dishes to share at 5:30 (if that requirement would keep you away, please email us and we'll get it figured out) to Zion Lutheran (2 blocks away for HL and BL).  Caroling will start shortly after that, with meal to follow.  Hope to see you all there!

And thank you to Adam4d.com for allowing me to use his comics!!  His comics are amazing and very Christ-centered.  :-)
